“You understand more when you read on paper” is one of those claims that’s repeated so often it’s either obviously true or obviously overstated, depending on who you ask. The research is more precise than either camp, and the precise version is more useful.
What the meta-analyses found
The reference point is Delgado, Vargas, Ackerman and Salmerón (2018), published in Educational Research Review under the memorable title “Don’t throw away your printed books.” It pooled a large body of studies comparing reading comprehension on paper versus screen.
The headline: a consistent screen inferiority effect. Comprehension was lower when reading digitally, and the effect held across educational levels from primary school to university. More strikingly, the advantage for print grew between 2000 and 2017 — the opposite of what you’d predict if the effect were just unfamiliarity with technology that people would grow out of.
A later meta-analysis focused on children (Review of Educational Research, 2021) added nuance around what digital texts contain — enhancements and interactivity can help or hurt depending on whether they support the text or distract from it.
The moderators are the interesting part
An average effect is much less useful than knowing when it appears. Three findings from the 2018 meta-analysis do most of the work:
1. Time pressure made it worse. The print advantage was larger when reading was under time pressure than when it was self-paced. That’s a strong hint that the effect isn’t really about photons versus ink — it’s about the reading behaviour each medium invites. Rushed screen reading is worse than rushed paper reading.
2. Computers were worse than hand-held devices. The media difference was stronger on computers than on smaller devices. A laptop is a machine with fifteen other things on it; a dedicated e-reader mostly isn’t.
3. Scrolling texts did worse. Texts requiring scrolling showed a disadvantage relative to paginated ones.
That third point deserves unpacking, because it’s the most mechanistic. Fixed pages give you a spatial map of a text — you remember that the definition was on the left-hand page, about two-thirds down, near the start of the chapter. That location memory helps you find things and helps you recall them. Infinite scroll destroys it: every position is a formless offset in a continuous ribbon.
Why the effect exists (the honest version)
Pulling the threads together, the screen disadvantage looks less like a property of screens and more like a bundle of correlated habits:
- Shallower processing. Years of scanning, skimming and F-pattern scrolling have trained a mode of reading that’s efficient for finding things and poor for absorbing them. We bring that mode to screens by default.
- Weaker spatial anchoring, from scrolling and reflowing text.
- Interruption. A device that reads is also a device that notifies. Every recovery from an interruption costs comprehension.
- Overconfidence. This one is well documented and underrated: people tend to overestimate how well they’ve understood something they read on screen. Because metacognitive judgement drives when you stop, overconfidence means you stop too early — before you’ve actually got it.
That last point is why the effect grew rather than shrank. It isn’t a technology-familiarity problem. It’s a habit problem, and the habits got stronger.
What this actually means for you
The unhelpful conclusion is “print everything.” Nobody is printing their reading list.
The useful conclusion is that the manipulable variables are mostly not the medium. Time pressure, scrolling, interruption and shallow processing are all addressable:
- Read self-paced. The print advantage shrinks when you’re not rushing. Give the hard reading its own block instead of squeezing it between things.
- Paginate. Use an e-reader, a PDF viewer set to page-at-a-time, or reader mode. Anything that gives you discrete pages rather than an infinite ribbon.
- Kill the notifications. Do Not Disturb during a reading block is worth more than switching media.
- Test yourself rather than trusting the feeling. Close the document and say what the section argued. This directly counters the overconfidence effect, and it’s the single highest-yield habit in reading comprehension strategies that actually work.
- Match medium to material. Dense, structural, reference-heavy → paper or a paginated reader. Narrative and argument → whatever’s convenient.
Where listening fits
Audio sidesteps the screen entirely — no scrolling, no notifications, no eye strain, and no scanning habit to fight, because you can’t skim what you’re listening to.
Comprehension research on fluent adults finds listening broadly comparable to reading for typical prose; the 2016 SAGE Open modality study found no significant differences between reading, listening and both together. The trade-off is the same control problem that shows up everywhere in this literature: you can’t re-read a sentence by ear without hunting for it. So audio inherits the print advantage on distraction and inherits the screen disadvantage on lookup.
